Frequently Asked
Questions
I have seen horses get beat, whipped and shanked to go onto a trailer. Will this happen to my horse if he is bad?
Absolutely not. I started doing this service because it makes me absolutely sick to see a horse mistreated to get on a trailer. My methods are patient, consistent and are based on common sense. There is no "whispering" or magic involved.
What are your rates for Trailer
Training?
I charge a flat fee of $85.00 per hour for training your horse to load onto a trailer. For clients beyond Bucks and Montgomery county there is an additional travel charge. The travel charge may be split when there is more than one horse and for clinics.
How long does it usually take to teach a horse to load?
Results will vary depending on the horse's experience
as well as the handler's capability.
Do you ever need to break the school down into more than one visit?
Sometimes with a really tough horse it helps to break things down into stages and do a follow up session at a later date, but the majority of horses are set to go the day of the first session. When I do get invited back to a farm it is usually to help the handler
become more comforatble with their skills.
Will I be able to load my horse
on the trailer once you leave?
After
I work with your horse I will give you all the
tools you need to load your horse consistently. Like anything else with horse training, you need to continue to practice and also be sure that you feel competent handling the horse.
My horse loads OK but then he freaks out once he is on the trailer, can you fix that?
That is a shipping problem--not a loading problem, but yes I can help fix that or provide you with a common sense solution. The most important thing with shipping a horse is safety. Safety of the handler and then safety of the horse. Some horses suffer from
claustrophobia or have had such a terrible experience that they will never ship safely again in a confined area. I have seen stock trailers help some horses that have these symptoms. The best thing to do is have the horse evaluated to see if it can be fixed by training or if it
is actually a permanent problem that will prevent the horse from ever being shipped safely. It is better to have clear facts and then make an educated decision based on those facts.
Will this training stick
with my horse?
Yes. You don't have to wait
to train your horse to load, but you do need to practice with him and keep him in some sort of program. Once he has these
skills they will be a part of him and they will
also help him in the future with other parts of
his training life.
Will my horse be trained to
go on both sides of the trailer?
Yes.
My horse
is old and set in his ways--can he really be taught
to load well?
Yes--any halter broke horse
whether they are green, middle aged or stubborn
can learn to load well again.
